i was just wondering who thinks that schools treat blind people diffrently?

i'm meant to be doing an exam next month and we looked at a past paper today but aparently it's all visual!

i mean do schools really have facilities that are specialized for the blind or do you think there just trying to treat people like us like sighted?

it's a thort. i'd be very interested in your responses

Hi, Stargate, Not sure if I would be understanding your question, but my experience at my college is that we have a Disability Services office on campus. Usually, if the teacher has a test, they have to fill out a form a few days before the test and then the disabled student takes the form back to the DS office and schedules the test to take it there at the office. (The office works with students with all kinds of disabilities by the way.) They have other people there who work as readers/scribes for students who need someone to read and write for them, and we have computers with JAWS and Kurzweil for students who would find it easier to do the work like that. And also, the reader/scribes will go with the students to take notes for them if the students can't write or can't write them fast enough or if the teacher does a lot of visual stuff. As for your test or review paper being visual, if it is a problem for you, you could talk to your instructor to see if there's something else you can do that's related to that, or you could get someone to explain what the pictures or charts are.

As for whether I think I've been treated differently by teachers, I think most of the time, unless they've met or known another blind person for awhile, they're more likely to treat you different. Most of the teachers I've had in college were willing to work with me, some even modifying my assignments. Personally, although I know in a way that that isn't fair for the other students, (if we're comparing them and me on this), I don't mind because I don't ask for them to do that and don't expect it. And if I screw up on something like extra time they might give me or a modified assignment, I blame myself for it and accept the consequences for it.

i always feel like i have been treated differently, and that's most likely because i have. I do not attend a school for the blind, and therefore, i have different examination arrangements than everyone else. This causes problems for me as much as makes it easy. For my drama exam last year, the board of studies messed up my extra time allowance, and i got double the time that the sighted kids got, i should have gotten much less. Even though this wasn't my fault, my final mark was scaled down because there was no other way the board could compansate for their mistake. because no matter what they did, i'd still have an advantage.
This in my opinion is not fair. I think my marks would have been the same iether way.
I guess i feel like i get treated differently because i happen to be the only one at my school with a disability.

Not at all, not in Germany at least. Well okay, I mean for a levels (your general exam when finishing high school) there will soon be a central exam for all schools. So yeah, in this case, it is true. But in the training I am doing the school still can choose the tasks, suggest something and the exam commision choose one of the suggestions. That is how they avoid visual things.
